Campaigns to avoid plastic usage have been a common theme in recent years. However, many plastic applications are not practically replaceable at this time because of their properties such as their weight/strength ratio, corrosion resistance, and affordability. Nonetheless, plastic waste trapped in the environment causes various environmental issues. To try and solve the plastic waste problem, there is renewed focus on designing solutions, such as creating biodegradable plastics in line with the circular economy principle.
While plastic waste deteriorates into fragments quickly through wear and tear, its polymer chain can only break down into smaller components at high temperatures and pressure, such as during the chemical recycling process. Recycling is a major concern for most industries and a key focal area for Dynapack Asia. We started adopting a circular model by giving plastic packaging a second life through mechanical recycling.
Recycling plastic waste and returning it to the manufacturing chain reduces the need to use virgin plastics and helps to create an economic circular from bottle to bottle. In 2021, Dynapack Asia in partnership with Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Indonesia (CCEP Indonesia), established PT. Amandina Bumi Nusantara to create a 20,000 square meters mechanical recycling facility. Located in Cikarang, West Java, the plant is able to process 30,000 metric tons of plastic waste annually to produce food-grade recycled PET resin. This ambitious and exciting project has substantial environmental benefits.

In 2000, this joint venture also established Yayasan Mahija Parahita Nusantara (“Mahija”), a foundation that aims to align the supply chain with human rights principles and ethical business practices.
Today, with 18 collection centers partnered with Mahija, the focus is on maintaining and enhancing the collection center's capacity. This includes giving education to scavengers and the surrounding community so they can be more productive and efficient. The training and assistance provided by Mahija aim to build awareness of basic business ethics and human rights. Makhija also reviews the operations to avoid child labor and modern slavery practices, ensuring that the operational process is accountable, whilst still providing financial education, support infrastructure, and also legal assistance. The Foundation also provides the community in the collection center area with additional benefits, such as health programs and free medical check-ups on a routine basis in partnership with doctorSHARE. Mahija has also rolled out plastic/environmental education for the children of scavengers, basic-needs donations, and other charity programs.
